Can you size up a ring?

Many people ask us if it's possible to resize a ring that is too tight. The answer is yes! It's actually a very common procedure in our line of work. Let us explain how it works.

First of all, if you have a ring that is too small, we suggest trying it on for a few days at different times of the day. Sometimes your fingers are more swollen than usual, and the ring might not fit properly. I often tell my clients that there is no such thing as a perfect size. Sometimes the ring will be a little tight, sometimes a little loose. It's normal; we just need to find a balance that is comfortable most of the time. It's also possible that during hot summer days, your rings might not fit. If it's only a few days a year, we recommend simply not wearing them on those days. If we resize the ring and it ends up being too big when your fingers aren't swollen, you could easily lose it if, for example, you wash your hands or make a sudden movement.

There are two options to enlarge a ring that is too small. If the ring is thick enough and only requires a small adjustment, it is possible to stretch it slightly until it reaches the desired size. This method is effective if the ring is at least 1 millimeter thick and if the required adjustment is no more than half a size. The advantage of this method is that there will be no soldering mark on the ring, but the disadvantage is that it may lose some thickness.

The second method involves cutting the ring and adding metal to enlarge it. This method is common and allows the ring to be enlarged by several sizes without losing thickness. It is important to note that this method is effective for rings without texture all around or without stones, as solutions for these types of rings can be visible.

At MCDécarie, we perform ring adjustments on-site at our workshop in Oka. We also offer a mail-in resizing service. For about $20, you'll receive a prepaid envelope and a ring sizer to take your measurement. Once we've received your ring, we'll perform the adjustment and return it to you by mail.
